EuroMare organised the presentation “YIANNIS GAÏTIS – PLURALISM & MULTITASKING” at the Gaïtis-Simossi Museum to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the renowned Greek artist’s death. The event aimed to highlight the often overlooked versatility of his work beyond the iconic “anthropaki” figure. This emblematic human form, following a formalistic exploration towards its complete schematisation (1970), dominated Gaïtis’ work from 1967 until his death in 1984. The repetition of this visual motif in numerous compositions, installations, and constructions led to the overshadowing of his earlier artistic production and the obscuring of his interdisciplinary activities in architecture, scenography, fashion design, and the creation of utilitarian objects.

The presentation featured distinguished speakers from the academic and artistic spheres, as well as from Yiannis Gaïtis’ personal and professional circle. The speakers included: Dimitris Alithinos, painter; Yiannis Bolis, art historian; Gavrilos Michalis, constructor and designer; Syrago Tsiara, Director of the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum; and Denys Zacharopoulos, art historian and art critic. The presentation was moderated by Irini Orati, art historian and Artistic Director of the Ioannou F. Costopoulos Foundation.

The presentation took place on Saturday, September 14, 2024, with the kind support of the Ioannou F. Costopoulos Foundation. The event was followed by the official inauguration of the Gaïtis-Simossi Museum by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mrs. Katerina Sakellaropoulou, in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Mrs. Lina Mendoni.
